Students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) on Saturday staged a protest march and showed red cards to newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam, rejecting his appointment.

The protest came as the campus remained tense for the fifth consecutive day following the removal of former VC Professor Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem and the appointment of Prof Shariful Alam on September 21.

The students brought out the procession from an area near the university’s medical centre around 2pm. Carrying red cards, they marched through different parts of the campus before ending the procession at the Shaheed Minar premises.

During the protest, the students chanted slogans including “We do not accept an online VC” and “Red card to the online VC”.

The protesters are demanding the reinstatement of Prof Sayem, who was removed from the post after serving as VC for 56 days.

They have continued their shutdown programme and other protests since the decision was announced.

Earlier on Saturday, students also drew protest graffiti on walls across the campus and continued their sit-in at the main gate.

Teachers and employees of the university have also expressed solidarity with the movement, with the CUET Teachers’ Association announcing a full-scale strike.

The protests have disrupted academic activities, with classes and examinations remaining suspended amid the ongoing standoff over the appointment of the new vice-chancellor.
