CHATTOGRAM: Students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) continued their protest on Friday, holding a demonstration on campus despite the holiday.
The students are demanding the reinstatement of Professor Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem as the university’s vice-chancellor.
The protest march began at around 2:30 p.m. from in front of the Teachers-Students Centre. The students marched through different areas of the campus before ending the procession at the main gate. They chanted slogans calling for Sayem’s reinstatement.
Campus sources said it was the 11th day of the students’ protests and that no action had yet been taken to address their demands. Classes and examinations at the university have remained suspended.
Students have held a number of protest programmes since the movement began, including torch processions, red-card demonstrations, the “Why 56?” campaign, a “White Saree Public Testimony” programme, masked marches, protests with black cloth over their eyes and a protest concert.
On September 21, Professor Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem was removed as CUET vice-chancellor and Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) was appointed as his replacement.
Students began protesting the same day, objecting to the change after Sayem had served only 56 days as vice-chancellor. They launched a “complete shutdown” the following day, September 22.
Eleven days into the movement, classes and examinations remain suspended, while the students’ demand for Sayem’s reinstatement has yet to be resolved.
