Promotion of assistant teachers to head teacher posts in government primary schools will begin soon, Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Hoque Milon told Parliament on Tuesday.

Responding to a written question from ruling party lawmaker Khairul Kabir Khokon, the minister said a long-pending writ petition related to head teacher promotions has recently been disposed of by the High Court, removing the legal barrier to the process.

“With the case now settled, promotions to the post of head teacher will be initiated very soon,” he said, adding that the move will help fill numerous vacant leadership positions in primary schools across the country.

Dr. Milon noted that under previous recruitment rules, 65 percent of head teacher posts were filled through promotion.

However, the new policy increases that share to 80 percent, reflecting the government’s focus on career progression within the primary education sector.

Although the updated rules had already been formulated, implementation was stalled due to the ongoing court case.

“Now that the legal issue has been resolved, 80 percent of the posts will be filled through promotion in line with the new rules,” the minister said.

He added that once the promotion process is completed, remaining vacancies will be addressed, ensuring stronger management and improved functioning of government primary schools.
