JU Correspondent: Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have temporarily suspended eight students of the Department of Physics over allegations of ragging and mentally harassing first-year students, reaffirming the university’s zero-tolerance stance against such practices.
The decision was announced in an office order signed by Acting Registrar ATM Azizur Rahman on Tuesday.
The suspended students are Md Fazle Hasan Fahad, Md Al-Amin Hossain, Md Tanvir Hasan, Md Faisal Ahmed, Md Mahmudul Hasan Khan Abir, Md Mahmud Amin Siam, Md Moshfikur Rahman and Syed Sakib Ahmed Rafu, all from the department’s 54th batch.
According to the office order, the alleged incident took place between 10:00 pm and 1:00 am on Monday, when several senior students reportedly took first-year students of the 55th batch to a room adjacent to the university’s Old Arts Building.
The accused allegedly subjected the freshers to mental harassment, intimidation and other forms of ragging during the late-night session.
The matter came to the attention of the university administration after reports of the incident spread on social media, prompting an immediate response from the authorities.
The office order noted that the university’s Student Discipline Ordinance strictly prohibits teasing, ragging and any form of abusive, humiliating or intimidating behaviour within residential halls, academic departments or anywhere on the campus.
Following a preliminary inquiry, the university authorities found prima facie evidence supporting the allegations and decided to suspend the eight students temporarily pending completion of a formal investigation.
The administration said disciplinary action would be taken in accordance with the university’s rules after the investigation is completed.
The move reflects the university’s continued efforts to curb ragging and ensure a safe and supportive academic environment for new students. JU authorities have repeatedly warned that any form of ragging or harassment will be dealt with firmly under the Student Discipline Ordinance.
