The Election Commission (EC) has announced the schedule for the country’s 23rd presidential election, with voting set for August 20.
The announcement was made on Thursday at the Election Building in Agargaon by EC Secretariat Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed during a press briefing.
According to the schedule, nomination papers must be submitted by August 13. The vote will take place a week later if more than one valid candidate is in the race.
As per the Constitution and the Presidential Election Act, Members of Parliament (MPs) are the sole voters in the election. In the event of multiple candidates, polling will be held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
However, if only one valid candidate is nominated, he or she will be declared elected unopposed.
With the announcement of the schedule, the formal process for electing the nation’s 23rd president has officially begun.
