EC to meet 26 ministries, agencies ahead of polls

The Election Commission (EC) will hold a preparatory meeting with 26 ministries, divisions and government agencies on Thursday to discuss arrangements for the upcoming local government elections and the by-election to the vacant Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary seat.

The meeting will be held at 2:30pm on September 17 at the conference room of the Election Commission Secretariat, according to a letter issued by EC Deputy Secretary Mohammad Monir Hossain on Monday.

The letter has already been sent to the concerned ministries, divisions, agencies and authorities, officials said.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) will chair the meeting, which will be attended by the other election commissioners.

The meeting will discuss preparations and coordination required for the election to the vacant Thakurgaon-1 constituency in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad as well as elections to local government institutions.

The ministries, divisions and agencies invited to the meeting include the Cabinet Division, Bangladesh Bank governor, Ministry of Public Administration, Ministry of Home Affairs, Inspector General of Police, Armed Forces Division, Secondary and Higher Education Division, Ministry of Shipping, Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives.

The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, Posts and Telecommunications Division, Technical and Madrasa Education Division, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), Bangladesh Post Office and the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) have also been asked to participate.

The EC has additionally invited the heads or representatives of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Bangladesh Coast Guard, Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP), Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), National Security Intelligence (NSI) and National Telecommunications Monitoring Centre (NTMC).

The director or an appropriate official from the Credit Information Bureau (CIB) of Bangladesh Bank has also been requested to attend the meeting.

The broad participation of security, administrative, financial, telecommunications, education and foreign affairs agencies is aimed at ensuring coordination among the relevant authorities ahead of the elections.
