The Election Commission (EC) has resumed the voter transfer process across Bangladesh amid delays in holding the planned local government elections.
The decision was communicated to field-level election officials on Wednesday through a letter signed by EC Senior Assistant Secretary Md Nasir Uddin Chowdhury.
The EC had earlier suspended voter transfers in September as it prepared to finalise the voter list ahead of local government elections planned for November.
Applications related to changes of residence were to be processed by September 10.
Under the latest decision, election offices at the upazila and thana levels have been instructed to resume accepting applications for voter transfers, conduct the necessary verification and scrutiny, and complete the process as before.
The move comes as the timetable for the local government elections remains unsettled.
The EC had initially planned to begin Union Parishad elections in November, but officials have indicated that the schedule may be delayed because of examinations and other considerations.
Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud recently said that if voting could not begin by the end of this year, it could start in the first week of January, although no final decision had been made.
The EC has not officially said that the resumption of voter transfers is directly linked to the delay in the elections.
However, reports indicate that the renewed process will allow voters who have changed residence to transfer their voter registration to their new areas.
