Democratic candidate and incumbent Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has won the election in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, defeating Republican challenger John Nagel to secure a fifth consecutive term in the US House of Representatives.

CBS News confirmed her victory on Tuesday (November 3) night.

Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District includes Minneapolis and its surrounding suburbs. It is considered one of the most Democratic-leaning districts in the state and the country. Omar has represented the district since 2019.

In the Democratic primary held in August, she defeated Julie T. Le, Abena McKenzie, Latonia Reeves and Nate Schluter by a wide margin. She had also received the party’s endorsement at its state convention in May.

A refugee who came to the United States from Somalia, Omar has long been a target of President Donald Trump’s anti-immigration rhetoric. After her first election to Congress, Trump told her to return to her country of origin. The US president has also repeatedly called her “garbage” and demanded investigations into her.

Omar has recently become the centre of renewed political controversy. Last month, investigators from the Department of Homeland Security raided her residence in Washington, DC. The operation is believed to have been part of an investigation into immigration documents submitted by her late father during her childhood.

Omar, however, described the incident as an abuse of power, calling it an unprecedented move to use federal law enforcement agencies to target political opponents.

Republican challenger John Nagel previously served as an officer with the Minnesota State Patrol. During his campaign, he pledged to crack down on government spending abuses, protect Medicare and Medicaid programmes, reform the Affordable Care Act and strengthen border security. Strengthening national defence was also among his campaign promises.
