Keya Group has laid off another 739 workers and employees from four of its factories in Jarun area of Konabari, Gazipur, in a second round of job cuts.

A notice announcing the layoffs was posted at the factories’ main gate on Monday night, Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent Mohammad Amzad Hossain said.

In September, the group laid off 627 workers and employees from the same four factories.

Workers arriving for duty on Tuesday morning found the notice at the factory gate. Many long-serving employees broke down in tears after learning they had lost their jobs.

The affected units are the Knit Composite Division, Spinning Division, Cotton Division and Keya Yarn Mills Ltd.

A notice signed by the company’s managing director and chairman said the factories had been under lay-off since June 6 due to banking complications, a gas shortage and other reasons. The lay-off period had subsequently been extended several times.

The notice said some positions in different departments and sections had been abolished to reduce production and administrative costs, as the factories had more employees than required.

The company also said that if recruitment resumes in the future, skilled workers who were laid off would receive priority under Section 21 of the Labour Act.

Employees whose jobs remain intact will continue under lay-off arrangements and receive benefits in accordance with the law.

The notice assured laid-off workers that all their outstanding dues would be paid within one month in accordance with labour legislation.
