The government has directed shopping malls, markets and shops across Bangladesh to close by 8pm from Wednesday, August 12, as part of measures to conserve electricity amid the ongoing power crisis.

Under the new directive issued by the Power Division of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, shops and shopping malls may remain open from 11am to 8pm. The previous closing time was 9pm.

The government has also ordered that all illuminated billboards be switched off by 7pm and that unnecessary decorative lighting be kept off.

In addition, fairs, trade fairs and cultural programmes must be completed by 8pm.

Food outlets, hospitals, pharmacies and other essential services will remain outside the scope of the new restrictions.

The directive was issued to reduce electricity consumption and prevent wastage amid the current power shortage.
