Bangladesh’s gas reserves in its 20 producing fields have fallen to 6 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) as of June from 6,321 billion cubic feet (Bcf) in January, according to Petrobangla.
The fields currently produce about 58 Bcf of gas per month, or around 700 Bcf annually, meaning existing reserves could last only about eight years if no major discoveries are made.
Petrobangla estimates the country’s total gas reserves at 7.63 Tcf, including 1,334 Bcf in 10 abandoned or non-producing fields that remain disconnected from the national grid due to technical and legal challenges.
Industry experts warned that declining domestic reserves and limited exploration could deepen the country’s energy crisis, threatening power generation, industrial output and future investment.
Petrobangla said it is drilling five wells in Zakiganj and Bhola under its 50- and 100-well drilling programmes to boost reserves. The government has also begun upgrading outdated 2D seismic surveys to 3D and is considering proposals from foreign companies to redevelop abandoned gas fields, officials said.
