Adani Power has reduced electricity supply from its 1,600MW Godda power plant in India to Bangladesh due to disruptions in coal transportation by rail, the company said on Wednesday.
In a statement, Adani Power said severe railway congestion and multiple loading restrictions across the transport network had disrupted the movement of coal-carrying railway rakes to the Godda plant.
As a result, the plant is receiving less coal than normal and has temporarily reduced power generation.
The company said it was deliberately reducing power dispatch during off-peak daytime hours to preserve sufficient generation capacity for the evening peak, when electricity demand is higher.
According to Power Grid Bangladesh data, the Godda plant supplied around 828MW at 8am on Wednesday against a forecast of 1,436MW.
Supply remained around 920MW for much of the day before rising to about 1,061MW at 5pm.
Adani Power said it had informed the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) about the situation and was working with Indian Railways to restore normal coal-rake availability as soon as possible.
The company expects the situation to normalise shortly.
The reduction comes as Bangladesh is already facing a significant electricity shortage due to a gas supply crisis.
The lower output from the Godda plant is expected to put further pressure on the country’s power supply and load-shedding situation.
The Godda plant, comprising two 800MW units, supplies electricity exclusively to Bangladesh under a long-term agreement with BPDB.
