QatarEnergy has halved its scheduled liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries to Bangladesh this year as disruptions linked to the conflict in the Gulf continue to affect shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, Petrobangla officials said on Tuesday.
Petrobangla said the supply disruption stems from the regional conflict, which has significantly restricted LNG tanker movements through the strategic waterway.
Qatar is Bangladesh’s largest LNG supplier, providing 4.15 million tonnes of the country’s nearly 7 million tonnes of LNG imports last year. Petrobangla has two long-term contracts with QatarEnergy for a combined 4.3 million tonnes per year.
Officials said Bangladesh has not received any LNG cargo loaded from Qatar’s Ras Laffan export terminal since the conflict began, forcing the country to procure replacement cargoes from the spot market.
According to Kpler, Bangladesh has imported 35 spot LNG cargoes since March.
Qatar has assured Bangladesh it will try to maintain supplies as much as possible despite the reduction, officials said.
Around 20% of global LNG trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making any disruption there a major concern for energy-importing countries such as Bangladesh.
