Fuel deliveries for Unit 2 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant are scheduled to begin in October 2026 and continue through December, with the entire supply expected to be completed by the end of the year, Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom said on Monday.
According to Rosatom, the nuclear fuel will be transported from Russia to Bangladesh in several flights, in line with the project contract and agreed delivery schedule.
The announcement follows a delay to a planned fuel shipment on September 24.
The cargo aircraft carrying the uranium reportedly could not use Pakistani airspace, preventing the shipment from reaching Bangladesh as scheduled.
Bangladesh’s Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam said the reason for the denial of airspace clearance was not known.
Officials involved in the project said the next shipments are expected to arrive from October 1, with another scheduled for October 8.
A total of several consignments will be required to deliver the fuel for Unit 2.
The Rooppur project consists of two VVER-1200 reactors, each with a generation capacity of 1,200MW, giving the plant a combined capacity of 2,400MW.
The first batch of low-enriched uranium fuel for Unit 1 arrived from Russia in October 2023, comprising 164 fresh fuel assemblies.
The fuel was transported to the plant under tight security arrangements involving the Bangladesh Army and law-enforcement agencies.
The latest schedule indicates that the delayed shipment has been rescheduled rather than cancelled, while Rosatom has said the overall Unit 2 fuel delivery programme remains on track for completion by December 2026.
