Bangladesh is not expected to face any shortage of liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies in October and November, as Petrobangla has secured 19 LNG cargoes for the next two months to meet demand.
According to Petrobangla, 10 cargoes will arrive in October and nine in November, ensuring a steady supply of LNG to the national gas grid.
Petrobangla Chairman Md Abdul Mannan said the required LNG cargoes for October and November had already been secured.
“We are working to ensure LNG supplies by considering demand for the following three months every month,” he said.
According to data from Petrobangla and the Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Ltd (RPGCL), three of October’s 10 cargoes will be purchased from the spot market, while two will come under long-term contracts and five under short-term contracts.
Of the nine cargoes scheduled for November, six will come under long-term contracts and three under short-term agreements.
The LNG is being sourced from several countries, including the United States, Nigeria, Angola and Australia.
Petrobangla Director (Finance) Mizanur Rahman said LNG was being procured from various sources according to demand and the cargoes would arrive on schedule.
“As a result, there is no major risk of an LNG supply shortage in the coming months,” he said.
According to RPGCL, each LNG cargo contains around 3.2 million MMBtu of gas. The 19 cargoes expected over the next two months will therefore contain approximately 60.8 million MMBtu of LNG in total.
After arriving in Bangladesh, the LNG will be regasified at terminals and supplied to the national gas grid through pipelines. The gas is used for power generation, industry and other sectors.
Bangladesh procures LNG under long-term contracts from QatarEnergy and OQ Trading. It also imports LNG through short-term contracts and the spot market as needed.
