DCs told to curb artificial LPG shortage

30 September 2026 18:23 Updated: 30 September 2026 18:23

Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku has directed district commissioners (DCs) to investigate whether an artificial shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is being created anywhere in the country to sell it at inflated prices.

He issued the directive during an online meeting with DCs at the Secretariat on Wednesday.

The minister said there is no shortage of LPG supply in the country, but artificial shortages may be being created in some areas to charge higher prices.

He asked the DCs to investigate why shortages are being reported in some areas despite adequate supply and why consumers are being charged higher prices. They were also instructed to submit reports with relevant information and evidence.

Tuku said the government would hold meetings with importers and other stakeholders after receiving the reports from the DCs and take necessary measures.

He added that steps would be taken to increase supplies in areas where shortages are found.

The minister warned that action would be taken against those who create artificial shortages or sell LPG above the prices set by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).

He also urged the DCs to remain vigilant to ensure a normal LPG supply across the country.
