PABNA: The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) began an inspection of Unit 1 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant on Sunday to verify its readiness and safety before the power startup phase.
The inspection was formally launched at a meeting at the Rooppur project’s training centre auditorium in the morning. The meeting was attended by the managing director of Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), representatives of NPCB, relevant specialists and a VO-Safety expert.
The inspection will cover technical, operational, safety and other preparatory aspects of Unit 1 ahead of its power startup. Relevant systems, documentation, operational readiness and the implementation of safety measures will also be examined.
The inspection will run from October 11 to 17, 2026. Following its completion, the relevant aspects will be assessed and the necessary regulatory procedures completed before the next stage.
Unit 1 of the Rooppur plant successfully achieved reactor criticality at 3:34pm on October 11. BAERA’s inspection marks an important regulatory milestone as the project prepares to move towards the next stage of increasing reactor power following criticality.
Safety remains the highest priority in the commissioning of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. All relevant tests, inspections and subsequent activities will be carried out in accordance with approved procedures and the instructions of the regulatory authority.
