After its theatrical release, Bangladeshi film “Delupi” is returning to the area where it was filmed, with a special screening scheduled for Friday (August 14) at the Botiyaghata Upazila Parishad Auditorium in Khulna.
The film will have four shows at 10:30am, 3pm, 5:15pm and 7:15pm, director Mohammad Tawquir Islam said. Each ticket has been priced at just Tk99.
“Delupi” was first released in Khulna on November 7 last year before hitting cinemas across Bangladesh the following week.
The film takes its inspiration from the name of Deluti Union in Paikgachha upazila of Khulna. It portrays the struggles of coastal communities facing river erosion, flooding, displacement and recurring natural disasters.
The film also explores local politics, social tensions and the struggle of the declining traditional jatra theatre and its performers to survive.
One of the film’s distinctive features is its use of local residents and performers from local jatra groups instead of professional star actors.
The director cast people whose real-life experiences closely resemble those of the characters portrayed in the film.
“Delupi” also earned recognition at international film festivals even before its domestic theatrical release.
Following its screening at the 55th International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Netherlands, the film was also selected for Austria’s Red Lotus Asian Film Festival Vienna.
