Tamil thriller Maharaja, starring Vijay Sethupathi, is set for a Hollywood remake after attracting significant international attention, particularly in China and on streaming platforms.
Producer Sudhan Sundaram has confirmed that a Hollywood agency approached the makers seeking remake rights following the film’s success in China and its performance on OTT platforms.
Speaking to The Times of India, Sundaram said the agency is now working to develop the project with an A-list actor and that filming could begin next year.
Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has emerged as a possible choice for the lead role originally played by Sethupathi. However, his involvement has not been confirmed.
“Maybe McConaughey is one of the stars they are talking to, but only the agency will be able to confirm,” Sundaram said.
The clarification comes after some social media posts suggested that McConaughey had already been confirmed for the remake. The makers have not officially announced the cast, studio or other details.
Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, Maharaja was released in 2024 and marked Sethupathi’s 50th film as a lead actor. The film follows a barber who reports his missing dustbin to the police, but what appears to be a simple complaint gradually develops into a dark and complex thriller.
Anurag Kashyap played the antagonist, with Mamta Mohandas, Natty, Abhirami and Sachana Namidass also appearing in key roles.
The film achieved strong international exposure after its theatrical run in India. Several reports have estimated that Maharaja earned around Rs 91.65 crore in China, while its availability on streaming platforms helped it reach audiences in other markets.
The producer specifically cited the film’s Chinese performance and OTT reception as factors behind the Hollywood agency’s interest in adapting the Tamil thriller for an English-speaking audience.
