Bangladeshi filmmaker Rubaiyat Hossain’s latest film The Difficult Bride has been selected for the International Competition at the Chicago International Film Festival, following its historic premiere as the first Bangladeshi film at the Venice International Film Festival.
The film had its world premiere in Venice in the festival’s prestigious Orizzonti section. It has since continued its international run with selections at the Toronto International Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival.
At Venice, The Difficult Bride won the independent film critics’ Premio Bisato d’Oro, while Hossain received the award for Best Director. Critics particularly praised the film’s exploration of the relationship between the female body, aesthetic beauty and social resistance.
Set in a beauty salon in contemporary Dhaka, the film tells a story rooted in the experiences and social realities surrounding its women characters.
The Difficult Bride is an international co-production involving Bangladesh’s Dhanya Talkies and Flag, along with established production companies from Germany, Portugal and Norway. The film brings together artists and crew members from several countries.
The film is Hossain’s fourth feature, following Under Construction and Made in Bangladesh, both of which received international recognition.
