The Actors’ Guild has extended financial and other support to poet and former popular actor Rifat Chowdhury, who is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
A delegation of the organisation visited him at the hospital on Tuesday (Sept 22), inquired about his health and provided immediate financial assistance.
Rifat reportedly spent two days on the hospital floor after being admitted as no bed was initially available. Although a bed was later arranged, he faced further difficulties meeting his treatment expenses.
The Actors’ Guild stepped in following reports of his condition. During Tuesday’s visit, the delegation checked on his treatment and assured him that the organisation would stand by him whenever necessary.
Actors’ Guild General Secretary and actor Rashed Mamun Apu confirmed the matter in a social media post.
“‘We are all for one another, and each of us for others.’ The Actors’ Guild has been working tirelessly with a commitment to stand by its members,” he wrote.
He said the delegation met Rifat to learn about his overall condition and provided financial assistance, while assuring him of continued support whenever needed.
Rifat has been suffering from serious complications involving his waist and legs for a long time. His condition has left him unable to walk normally.
He has also been largely isolated from his family for years and has had limited contact with fellow members of the entertainment industry, leaving him largely out of the public eye. During his illness, loneliness has become an additional challenge.
The Actors’ Guild said it would continue providing assistance to artists facing difficulties and assured that support for Rifat would continue as needed.
