Mezbaur Rahman Sumon’s film ‘Roid’ has been selected as Bangladesh’s official entry for the 99th Academy Awards, representing the country in the International Feature Film category.
The announcement was made at a press conference held at Hotel Sonargaon in Dhaka on Sunday.
Five films were submitted this year for consideration as Bangladesh’s entry. Four advanced to the initial shortlist before ‘Roid’ was selected as the final entry.
The selection is being viewed as an important achievement for Bangladeshi cinema, offering an opportunity to showcase the country’s stories, culture and filmmaking on an international platform.
Members of the film’s cast said the Oscar campaign represents an opportunity not only for ‘Roid’ but also for Bangladeshi cinema to present its stories to a global audience.
The screenplay was written by Siddiq Ahmed, Mezbaur Rahman Sumon, Zahid Faruk and Shukarna Shahed Dhiman. Mostafizur Noor Imran and Nazifa Tushi play the two central characters in the film.
Speaking about the selection, actor Nazifa Tushi said ‘Roid’s’ Oscar journey could open new possibilities for Bangladeshi cinema.
The film’s team will now await the Academy’s final nomination list. If ‘Roid’ secures a nomination, it could create further opportunities for Bangladeshi cinema on the international stage.
