Jon Watts, director of the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man trilogy, is attached to direct the first film in a new Star Wars trilogy being developed by writer Simon Kinberg.
The project is intended to continue the Skywalker Saga, which concluded with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. The new film could become Episode X and is expected to feature Rey Skywalker, played by Daisy Ridley in the previous trilogy.
Kinberg has been developing the trilogy since late 2024, with the storyline being kept largely under wraps. Sources said the project remains in development and has not yet received a green light from Disney, Lucasfilm’s parent company.
Lucasfilm declined to comment.
The project is reportedly the furthest along among the studio’s potential new Star Wars films after Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling. Starfighter is scheduled for theatrical release on May 27, 2027, marking the 50th anniversary of the original Star Wars film.
Watts would be returning to the franchise after co-creating and co-writing Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which premiered in 2024. He also directed two episodes of the series.
The filmmaker previously directed Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). The trilogy grew progressively larger in scale and became major box-office successes, establishing Watts as a director experienced with large-scale franchise productions.
Watts later directed Wolfs, the George Clooney and Brad Pitt crime comedy released by Apple.
His Skeleton Crew also featured Jude Law and brought together directors including David Lowery, Lee Isaac Chung, Jake Schreier, Bryce Dallas Howard and the Daniels.
The latest development signals that Lucasfilm is continuing to shape the next phase of the Star Wars franchise, although the new trilogy remains subject to official approval.
