Bangladeshi rock icon Faruq Mahfuz Anam James, popularly known as Nagar Baul James and “Guru” to his fans, turns 62 today (October 2).

Born in Naogaon on October 2, 1964, James grew up in Chattogram, where he began his musical journey.

He formed the band Feelings in 1977 and later renamed it Nagar Baul. The band released its debut album, Station Road, in 1987. James rose to wider fame with his solo album Ononna in 1988.

He subsequently released a series of successful albums, including Jail Theke Bolchhi, Nagar Baul, Lace Fita Lace and Collection of Feelings.

His distinctive voice, powerful guitar playing and fusion of rock with folk influences helped shape Bangladesh’s band-music scene, particularly during the 1990s.

James has also enjoyed success as a playback singer. He won Bangladesh National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer for Desha: The Leader and Swatta.

His popularity extended beyond Bangladesh after he sang several hit songs for Bollywood films, including Gangster, Woh Lamhe, Life in a… Metro and Warning.

Despite his decades-long career, James says he does not usually celebrate his birthday on a grand scale. “The fans celebrate it, and I observe that,” he told on his 62nd birthday.

He said touring and live performances have left him with little dedicated time to create new music.

James said the current music scene is highly saturated, comparing it to photography, another field he is passionate about. He believes genuine passion remains essential to keeping art and culture alive.

At 62, the “Guru” remains a major figure in Bangladesh’s rock music, with generations of listeners continuing to connect with songs such as Taray Taray, Maa, Bangladesh, Pagla Hawaa, Dushtu Cheler Dol and Mirabai.
