Bollywood actor Imran Khan has been ordered to leave India by October 28 for allegedly violating foreigner regulations by participating in a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) issued the notice after Khan was detained by Mumbai police on Saturday for taking part in the demonstration.
BJP leader Kirit Somaiya filed a complaint against the actor, claiming that he is a US citizen. Police said the complaint was lodged at Gamdevi police station and subsequently forwarded to the FRRO, which issued the notice.
An unnamed police official said the notice stated that Khan had violated the law by participating in the protest and directed him to leave the country by October 28.
Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders are generally granted lifelong visas but cannot vote or contest elections. The OCI rules do not explicitly specify whether prior permission is required to participate in protests.
Article 19 of the Indian Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and peaceful assembly to Indian citizens, rather than foreign nationals.
