A Dhaka court has ordered the imprisonment of television actor Md Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, popularly known as Zaheer Alvi, after the completion of his two-day remand in a case filed over allegedly abetting the suicide of his wife, Ikra.
The order was passed on Tuesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid after police produced the actor before the court following the end of his remand.
According to plaintiff’s lawyer Abzal Hossain Mridha, no bail petition was filed on behalf of Alvi during the hearing. The court subsequently ordered that he be sent to jail. The complainant’s side also urged the court to ensure a thorough investigation and bring any other individuals found connected to the incident under the scope of the probe.
Investigating Officer Inspector Abdul Malek of the Mirpur Zonal Team of the Detective Branch (DB) sought an order to keep the actor in custody until the investigation is completed.
In his application, the investigator said Alvi was taken to the DB office on June 28 after undergoing a medical examination, where he was interrogated. The application claimed that investigators obtained important information during questioning and found preliminary evidence suggesting his involvement in the incident. On that basis, police argued that he should remain in custody until the investigation is complete.
Earlier, on June 24, the court had granted police a two-day remand to question the actor.
Alvi had surrendered before the court on June 18 and sought bail, but the plea was rejected and he was sent to jail. Police later sought a 10-day remand for interrogation. The other accused in the case, Alvi’s mother Nasrin Sultana Shyuli, was granted bail after surrendering before the court on June 4.
According to the case documents, Ikra was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf at her residence in Mirpur on March 1. She was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Police later visited the hospital, prepared an inquest report and collected evidence from the residence.
The case was filed by Ikra’s maternal uncle, Sheikh Tanvir Ahmed. It names Zaheer Alvi and his mother as accused, alleging that prolonged domestic disputes and various forms of abuse drove Ikra to take her own life.
