The Kahaani franchise is set to return with a fresh chapter, with actress Yami Gautam taking the lead in Kahaani 3, according to a report by Pinkvilla. Acclaimed filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh is also returning to direct the third installment of the popular thriller series.
Unlike the first two films, Kahaani 3 will not continue the story of Vidya Balan’s iconic character. Instead, the new film will introduce an entirely original plot while remaining within the same cinematic universe that made the franchise a fan favorite.
According to the report, the filmmakers aim to expand the Kahaani universe without repeating earlier storylines. Yami Gautam will reportedly play a central character with a strong and compelling arc.
A source quoted by Pinkvilla said the film is currently in the pre-production stage, with the team working on finalizing the shooting schedule. The source added that Sujoy Ghosh has a clear vision for the franchise and is focused on delivering a fresh thriller that retains the essence of the original films.
The collaboration between Ghosh and Gautam has generated considerable excitement, with production timelines now being worked out.
Released in 2012, Kahaani became a critical and commercial success, starring Vidya Balan as a pregnant woman searching for her missing husband in Kolkata. The film earned widespread acclaim for its gripping screenplay, unexpected twists and Vidya’s award-winning performance.
The franchise returned in 2016 with Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh, featuring Vidya Balan alongside Arjun Rampal. Although it was not a direct sequel, the film continued the franchise’s tradition of suspense-driven storytelling and emotional depth, further cementing Kahaani as one of Bollywood’s most acclaimed thriller series.
