Dhaka: The capital city is experiencing some relief from its usual air pollution levels.
According to data from international air quality monitoring platform IQAir on Thursday, Dhaka has dropped significantly in the global ranking of cities with the worst air quality. The latest index shows Dhaka with an AQI score of 79, ranking 23rd worldwide. This falls within the “moderate” or tolerable range of air quality.
Dhaka has long featured among the world’s most polluted cities, making the current improvement a welcome relief for city residents.
According to IQAir’s standards, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered “good,” while a score of 51 to 100 is classified as “moderate.” Dhaka’s current score falls within the latter range. However, even at this level, sensitive groups may need to exercise some caution.
Meanwhile, Kampala, the capital of Uganda, tops the list with an AQI of around 192, indicating an unhealthy level of air pollution. Malaysia’s Kuching and Pakistan’s Lahore are also among the cities with relatively high pollution levels.
Compared with many other heavily polluted cities, Dhaka’s air is currently considerably cleaner. Residents hope that favorable weather and environmental conditions will help sustain this improvement in air quality.
