Dhaka: Air quality in Dhaka has improved slightly, but the city remains at a level considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, according to the latest data from international air quality monitoring platform IQAir.
As of Sunday morning, Dhaka ranked 13th among the world’s most polluted major cities, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 107. The data was updated between 8:00 am and 9:00 am on September 6.
An AQI score between 101 and 150 is classified as “unhealthy for sensitive groups, meaning children, older adults and people with existing health conditions may be particularly vulnerable.
Under the AQI classification, scores of 0–50 are considered “good,” 51–100 “moderate,” 101–150 “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” 151–200 “unhealthy,” 201–300 “very unhealthy,” and above 300 “hazardous.”
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Kuching topped the global ranking with an AQI score of 229, placing it in the “very unhealthy” category.
Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur ranked second with a score of 182, while Kampala, Uganda, ranked third with an AQI of 154.
Senegal’s capital Dakar ranked fourth with a score of 147, followed by Chengdu, China, in fifth place with an AQI score of 137.
