Greater emphasis should be placed on research and innovation in zoology and biological sciences to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable development, Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni has said.
“Zoology and biological sciences are extremely important for human existence, nature conservation and maintaining environmental balance,” he said, adding that biology is closely linked to food, the environment and human life.
The Chief Whip made the remarks as the chief guest at the general meeting of the Zoological Society of Bangladesh held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban in Dhaka on Saturday.
Moni said food is one of the fundamental requirements for human survival and food production depends directly on plants and various animal species. Fish, meat and plant-based foods are closely linked to human nutrition and livelihoods, he said.
“Therefore, protecting animals and plants means protecting the food supply and livelihoods of people,” he said.
He said ensuring access to food, clothing, healthcare and quality education for children was also an important part of improving people’s lives.
The Chief Whip said Bangladesh’s diverse ecosystems, including rivers, haors, forests, hills, wetlands and the Sundarbans, provide habitats for numerous animal and plant species.
Protecting the country’s rich biodiversity, therefore, requires safeguarding flora and fauna and maintaining the balance of natural ecosystems, he said.
Moni also highlighted the potential of the younger generation in research and innovation.
He said young people could make important contributions to conserving the country’s natural resources and biodiversity, as well as to economic and social development, through scientific innovation and sustainable research.
The meeting also featured discussions among experts on biodiversity and wildlife conservation, addressing the impacts of climate change, applying advanced technologies and ensuring sustainable environmental management.
