Government employees in Bangladesh will have the opportunity to enjoy a five-day break during Durga Puja in 2026 by taking just one additional day off.
According to the government holiday calendar issued by the Ministry of Public Administration, October 20 (Tuesday) will be a holiday by executive order on the occasion of Mahanavami, while October 21 (Wednesday) will be a general holiday for Bijoya Dashami.
Although the main government holidays for Durga Puja will begin on October 20, employees can take October 22 (Thursday) off and combine it with the weekly holidays on Friday and Saturday to enjoy five consecutive days off.
This means government employees can have a continuous holiday from Tuesday, October 20, through Saturday, October 24.
In addition to the public holidays, Hindu government employees will have two optional holidays for Durga Puja. They can avail themselves of these additional holidays subject to the prescribed rules and approval.
This year, Durga Puja festivities will begin with Mahalaya on October 10 (Saturday). Maha Shashthi will be observed on October 16 (Friday), Maha Saptami on October 18 (Sunday), Maha Ashtami on October 19 (Monday), Mahanavami on October 20 (Tuesday), and Bijoya Dashami on October 21 (Wednesday).
Thus, although the Durga Puja festivities will officially begin with Mahalaya on October 10, the government holiday will start on October 20. By taking October 22 off, government employees can enjoy a five-day break by combining the Puja holidays with the weekly weekend.
