Eight more children died with measles-like symptoms across Bangladesh in the 24 hours to 8am on Saturday, taking the combined number of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths to 902 this year.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 803 deaths have been classified as suspected measles deaths, while 99 deaths were confirmed to have been caused by measles.
During the same 24-hour period, 728 children developed measles-like symptoms, while 70 new measles cases were confirmed through laboratory tests, bringing the cumulative number of suspected cases to 141,776 and confirmed cases to 17,800 since March 15.
Six of the latest deaths occurred in Dhaka and two in Sylhet.
A total of 700 children were hospitalised in the past 24 hours, while 549 patients recovered and were discharged.
The figures highlight the continuing severity of Bangladesh’s measles outbreak, which has persisted for months despite nationwide vaccination efforts.
