Five more people have died with measles symptoms across Bangladesh in the last 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services’ (DGHS) latest regular measles report released on Tuesday.
The report said the deaths occurred between 8:00am Monday and 8:00am Tuesday. With these fatalities, the number of deaths with measles symptoms has reached 844 since March 15. In addition, 99 confirmed measles deaths have been reported, bringing the combined death toll to 943.
The DGHS’s regular statistics do not provide age-wise data. Epidemiologists say measles can affect people of all ages, although children are more vulnerable. During an outbreak, all deaths involving measles symptoms are considered measles-related deaths.
According to Tuesday’s report, another 986 people developed measles symptoms across the country in the past 24 hours. Since March 15, a total of 151,638 people have developed measles symptoms.
The DGHS also reported 91 newly confirmed measles cases in the latest 24-hour period. Since March 15, measles has been confirmed in a total of 18,578 people.
So far, 132,554 patients with measles symptoms have been admitted to hospitals since March 15. Of them, 127,811 have recovered and been discharged.
