Five more people have died of dengue in Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, while another 1,324 patients have been admitted to hospitals with the mosquito-borne disease.
With these latest fatalities, the number of dengue-related deaths in the country this year has risen to 102. Of them, 43 people died in August alone.
According to data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), two people died of dengue in January, two in February, one in May, 13 in June and 36 in July. Another five deaths have been reported so far in September.
The DGHS disclosed the figures in its dengue-related bulletin issued on Tuesday, covering the 24-hour period from 8am Monday to 8am Tuesday.
According to the DGHS, a total of 36,170 people have been hospitalized with dengue across the country since January 1 this year. Of them, 34,385 have recovered and been discharged from hospitals. At present, 2,683 dengue patients are receiving treatment at hospitals across the country.
In the past 24 hours, 142 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals in areas under Dhaka North City Corporation, while 138 were admitted to hospitals in areas under Dhaka South City Corporation. Another 298 patients were hospitalized outside the two Dhaka city corporations.
Among the other divisions, 121 patients were admitted to hospitals in Barishal, 139 in Chattogram, 246 in Khulna, 87 in Mymensingh, 114 in Rajshahi, 34 in Rangpur and five in Sylhet.
