Do you often find yourself replaying conversations, decisions or past events over and over again? Overthinking can trap the mind in a cycle of worry—especially about things that never happened or outcomes that may never occur.

Mental health experts warn that excessive thinking is not the same as problem-solving.

In fact, it can increase anxiety, emotional exhaustion and even contribute to mental health issues.

According to Indian psychiatrist Dr Chandni Tugnait, overthinking is often mistaken for being cautious or responsible.

However, the two are fundamentally different. While problem-solving helps you move forward, overthinking keeps you stuck in the same mental loop without reaching a solution.

One of the key signs of overthinking is revisiting the same situation repeatedly without progress. It’s not about how much you think, but how often your mind circles back to the same unproductive pattern.

Instead of letting your thoughts wander endlessly, try setting a specific time to reflect on what’s bothering you. Once that time is up, consciously let it go and shift your focus elsewhere.

Ask yourself: Is this real or imagined?
A major cause of overthinking is worrying about situations that haven’t even happened.

Pause and ask yourself, “Am I reacting to something real, or something I’m imagining?” This simple question can help ground your thoughts in reality.

Use physical activity to reset your mind
Sometimes, the solution to overthinking isn’t more thinking. Activities like walking, exercising, doing household chores or talking to someone you trust can help calm your nervous system and break the cycle of repetitive thoughts.

Experts also note that overthinking tends to grow in silence. Staying physically active or engaging in conversation can reduce its intensity.

Most importantly, remember that not every thought deserves your attention or belief.

Everyone overthinks at times—the key is recognizing when your mind is stuck in a loop and gently guiding it back. Focus on facts over fear, and practice letting go of repetitive thoughts.

The goal isn’t to stop thinking altogether, but to prevent certain thoughts from taking control of your life.
