Dr Anchal Roy, an assistant registrar at Mugda Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, died of dengue while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital on Sunday morning. She was 30.

Dr Roy, an officer of the 42nd BCS (Health) Cadre, died at around 8:20am while receiving treatment in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

She had been serving in the neurology department at Mugda Medical College Hospital and was recently attached to the respiratory medicine department.

She had also treated dengue patients as part of her professional duties.

According to family members, Dr Roy had been suffering from fever for several days.

Her condition deteriorated after her platelet count fell sharply, prompting her family to take her to Square Hospital.

She was initially admitted to the high-dependency unit before being shifted to the ICU as her condition worsened.

A graduate of Noakhali Medical College, Dr Roy had recently passed the FCPS mid-term examination in internal medicine. She had also passed Part One of the MRCP (UK) examination.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain expressed deep shock and sorrow at her death and conveyed condolences to her family, relatives and colleagues.

Her death comes amid a sharp rise in dengue infections in Bangladesh, with September emerging as the deadliest month of the year’s outbreak.

DGHS data showed that 225 people had died of dengue nationwide by Sunday morning, including 128 deaths in September.
