Two more children died with measles or measles-like symptoms in Bangladesh in the 24 hours to Monday morning, while 1,421 new cases of suspected and confirmed measles were reported, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

No deaths from confirmed measles were recorded during the period, the DGHS said in a statement on Monday, covering the period from 8:00 am Sunday to 8:00 am Monday.

Of the newly reported cases, 1,269 were suspected measles infections, while 152 were confirmed cases.

Since March 15, a total of 1,164 children have died from measles and measles-like symptoms, including 1,060 deaths involving suspected cases and 104 involving confirmed measles, according to the DGHS data updated through October 12.

During the same period, 183,226 patients with suspected measles were admitted to hospitals, of whom 175,655 were discharged after recovery.

The DGHS said 206,297 people had developed measles-like symptoms across the country between March 15 and October 12. Of them, 22,573 were confirmed to have measles.

The figures indicate a continuing burden of suspected and confirmed measles cases on the country’s healthcare system.
