Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police have recovered two black stone idols weighing a total of 135.87 kg during a joint operation in Daihara village of Kalai upazila in Joypurhat and detained three people.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Latiful Bari, commanding officer of Joypurhat Battalion (20 BGB), disclosed the information in a press release at around 2pm on Friday.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team conducted the operation in Daihara village at around 9pm on Thursday and recovered a large idol weighing 119 kg and a smaller one weighing 16.87 kg, according to BGB.
The detainees were identified as Alif Hossain, 22, and Sorjina Akter, 30, of Daihara village in Gobindaganj upazila, and Enamul Haque, 50, of Jirai village.
BGB said the seizure value of the two idols was estimated at Tk 1.35 crore. Authorities at the Paharpur Buddhist Vihara under the Department of Archaeology examined the quality of the black stone used in the idols and issued a certificate confirming it.
Lt Col Latiful Bari said the process of handing over the detainees and the recovered idols to Gobindaganj Police Station in Gaibandha was underway.
