M Capital, an investment firm chaired by former Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur, has announced plans to establish a $1 billion fund to channel capital from expatriate Bangladeshis into productive investments in the country.

The firm officially launched the initiative at an event titled “Dakche Bangladesh” (Bangladesh is Calling) in New York on September 26. Former interim government Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Chairman Ashik Chowdhury attended the event.

Professor Yunus called on expatriate Bangladeshis to contribute their technology, skills and expertise to initiatives aimed at strengthening Bangladesh’s economy and social businesses.

Ashik Chowdhury highlighted ongoing economic reforms and encouraged expatriate and foreign investors to visit Bangladesh and assess the country’s investment environment.

Ahsan H Mansur said the $1 billion initiative would include three specialized funds: the Financial Services Fund, Distressed Asset Management Fund and Healthcare Impact Fund.

The funds will operate under domestic and international laws and will have independent advisory oversight and a two-year lock-in period. BRAC Bank will serve as trustee and custodian.

M Capital also plans to reach Bangladeshi expatriates in 100 cities worldwide to attract investment.

Mansur said the initiative aims to leverage the capital, networks and experience of Bangladeshis living abroad to help transform Bangladesh into a technology-driven, high-value investment destination.
