Dhaka: A court in Dhaka has sentenced six young men to life imprisonment until death for the gang rape of two young women in South Keraniganj. The court also fined each convict Tk 100,000.

The verdict states that if the convicts fail to pay the fines, the money must be recovered by selling their movable or immovable assets. The Dhaka District Magistrate (Collector) has been directed to ensure that the compensation is paid to the victims and their families.

The judgment was delivered on Tuesday (August 4) by Judge Munshi Md. Moshiar Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 in Dhaka.

The convicted men are Rahul, Diamond, Anim, Palash, Minhaj Abedin, and Minhaj Babu.

According to the case documents, on the afternoon of June 25, 2022, the two young women went out with several friends to celebrate a friend’s birthday. At around 9:45 p.m., after having dinner at a restaurant in Keraniganj, they were searching for an auto-rickshaw in the Shubhadya area to return home when the accused blocked their path with a three-wheeler.

The assailants allegedly assaulted and threatened the victims’ friends, robbed them of cash and mobile phones, and took the two women to a dark field known as “Ratan’s Farm.” There, the women were gang-raped, and the attackers recorded videos of the assault before seizing the victims’ mobile phones.

The victims were later rescued after their friends informed South Keraniganj Police Station. On June 29, 2022, the father of one of the victims filed a case with the police station.
