The High Court has granted bail to television actor Zaher Alvi, also known as Md. Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, in a case filed over allegations of abetting the suicide of his wife, Afra Ibnat Ikra. The order removes all legal barriers to his release.
The bail was granted on Sunday by a High Court bench comprising Justice K.M. Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher after making the rule absolute. Court sources confirmed the development on Monday.
Earlier, on June 30, police produced Zaher Alvi before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka after completing a two-day remand. Investigators sought to keep him in custody until the investigation was completed, and Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junayed ordered that he be sent to jail.
On June 18, the actor had surrendered before a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court through his lawyer and sought bail. The court rejected his plea and ordered him to be sent to jail. Later, police sought a seven-day remand for further investigation, but Metropolitan Magistrate Al Biruni Mir granted a two-day remand on June 24.
According to the case statement, Afra Ibnat Ikra was found hanging at the couple’s residence in Mirpur DOHS in Dhaka on February 28. She was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
The following day, Ikra’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case with Pallabi Police Station, alleging that prolonged family disputes and mental abuse by Zaher Alvi had driven his daughter to take her own life.
Zaher Alvi and Afra Ibnat Ikra were married in 2010 and have a son.
