Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-13 has arrested three people in connection with the murder of a rickshaw garage owner in Rangpur city, allegedly over longstanding disputes involving marriage, divorce and financial transactions.
The elite force made the arrests during raids conducted within 24 hours of the murder, RAB officials said.
The arrestees have been identified as Dulal Mia, 45, of Mahiganj; Firoza Begum, 55, of Lalmonirhat; and Rezaul Islam, 55.
Biplob Kumar Goswami, Additional Superintendent of Police and Senior Assistant Director of RAB-13, said the suspects provided important information about the alleged murder plot during initial interrogation.
According to RAB, Dulal, who used to rent rickshaws from the victim, had mediated the victim’s marriage to Firoza around five to six months ago after his first wife left him.
Dulal allegedly received financial benefits for arranging the marriage, while Firoza was reportedly promised two auto-rickshaws.
The marriage, however, ended within a week following allegations of physical and mental abuse.
Dulal later mediated their divorce, which took place seven days before the murder.
RAB said the victim paid Firoza Tk 1 lakh as a divorce settlement, of which Dulal allegedly retained Tk 50,000.
The dispute reportedly intensified when Dulal demanded additional money from Firoza. She allegedly told him that if she could obtain two rickshaws from the victim, she would give one to him.
As the rickshaws had not been provided, Dulal and Firoza allegedly joined Rezaul in planning the murder to settle their financial and personal grievances, according to RAB.
The three suspects are now being processed for further legal action, RAB said.
