A court in Narail has sentenced a man to death for the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl, Jannatul Mawa.
Narail Child Violence Prevention Tribunal Judge Sheikh Shamidul Islam delivered the verdict on Wednesday, also fining convict Robiul Shikdar Rabi Tk 300,000.
Rabi, son of Atiar Rahman Shikdar of Ramchandrapur village in Narail Sadar upazila, and the victim’s family lived in the same village. Jannatul was the daughter of Mofizur Sheikh.
Public Prosecutor Ajibur Rahman confirmed the verdict.
According to the case statement, Rabi called Jannatul to his home on the afternoon of July 20. When her family could not find her, they went to Rabi’s house and found the child wrapped in a quilt and lying on the floor. She was taken to Narail Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
That night, Jannatul’s father filed a case against Rabi, naming several others as unidentified accused.
On the following morning, July 21, local residents detained Rabi at Dattapara bus stand, assaulted him and handed him over to police.
The investigating officer sought a seven-day remand on July 22. After a hearing, the court granted two days’ remand. During questioning, Rabi reportedly confessed to raping and killing the child and later gave a confessional statement before the court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Police completed the investigation after receiving the autopsy report on July 22 and the DNA test report on July 28. The investigating officer submitted the charge sheet to the Sadar Magistrate Court on August 4.
