A court in Bogura has sentenced a father to death for raping his own daughter. He was also fined Tk 200,000.
Judge Maruf Hossain of the Bogura Children’s Court pronounced the verdict on Thursday morning.
The convict, Abdul Khalek, 51, is a resident of Bagara Basti area in Sherpur upazila. He was present in court when the verdict was announced.
Advocate Ali Asgar, public prosecutor of the Bogura Children’s Court, confirmed the matter.
According to the case statement and court sources, Khalek raped his daughter at around 4:30am on October 21, 2020. At the time, the child’s stepmother had gone to a nearby rice mill to work.
After the rape, Khalek threatened to kill the girl if she told anyone about the incident. Later, changes in the child’s behavior were noticed. As she was unable to perform household chores properly, her stepmother began beating her. At one point, the child told her stepmother what had happened.
However, instead of believing her daughter’s allegation against her husband, the stepmother subjected the child to even more abuse. Later, seeking to escape the abuse, the girl told two of her classmates about the incident.
After learning about the matter from the classmates, local residents informed the police. Subsequently, on October 31, 2020, the child’s mother, who was the accused’s second wife, filed a case against her husband at Sherpur Police Station.
The public prosecutor said that after reviewing the evidence and testimony presented by the prosecution, the court sentenced the sole accused, Abdul Khalek, to death.
The girl is currently in the custody of her stepmother.
