Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said the government appointed Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir in accordance with the Constitution. However, he did not directly answer whether Kabir had renounced his dual citizenship.
Responding to journalists’ questions after an event at the Ministry of Social Welfare on Tuesday, the law minister said, “First of all, what is provided for in the law remains in place. Secondly, what this government has done has been done in accordance with the Constitution. There has been no deviation from the Constitution.”
“Therefore, what we have done has been done constitutionally. This is called the deeming clause. When the oath was administered, it was done constitutionally,” he added.
Reports have recently appeared in the media that Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir, who was appointed as a technocrat state minister last Friday, holds British citizenship.
On Monday, journalists asked Kabir about his British citizenship.
When asked whether he had renounced his British citizenship, Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir responded with a counter-question: “Who reported this news? Why are they so concerned about it?”
Kabir took oath as a state minister last Friday. After the BNP-led government was formed on February 17, he had been serving as the Prime Minister’s adviser on foreign affairs with the rank of a state minister.
