The High Court has granted bail to Bidisha Siddique, former wife of late President and founder chairman of the Jatiya Party, Hussain Muhammad Ershad, in a fraud case, clearing the way for her release, her lawyers said.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Md Khairul Alam and Justice Md Rafiqul Islam passed the order on Sunday (September 6) following a bail petition filed by Bidisha.
Earlier, on May 20, a court sentenced Bidisha to two years of rigorous imprisonment in a case filed over an alleged fraud involving the sale of a flat.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam announced the verdict, sentencing her to two years in prison and fining her Tk 10,000. In default of payment, she would have to serve an additional month in jail. As Bidisha was absent from the court on the day of the verdict, the court also issued an arrest warrant against her.
On August 26, another Dhaka metropolitan magistrate, Aminul Islam Junaid, ordered that Bidisha be sent to jail in the case following a hearing.
Businessman Mosharraf Hossain filed the case on February 7, 2008.
According to the case documents, the complainant is an importer and trader of sanitary products in the Mirpur-10 area. In 2001, he contacted Bidisha with the intention of purchasing a flat in Baridhara.
Later, an agreement was reached to sell a flat at President Park in Baridhara for Tk 80 lakh.
The case was subsequently filed alleging fraud in connection with the transaction.
