District Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested three people in connection with the killing of a mother, her son and her mother in Kachua upazila of Bagerhat.
Police said an ongoing dispute stemming from an alleged extramarital affair led to the planned murders.
Bagerhat Superintendent of Police Hasan Mohammad Nasher Rikabdar disclosed the information at a press briefing at the SP’s conference room on Sunday (6 September).
The arrested suspects are Jahidul Islam, a mason and son of Majid Howladar; Asadul Sheikh, son of Sultan Sekh; and Mohammad Arif Howladar alias Babu, son of Barik Howladar. All three are from the same area and are close relatives.
Police recovered four mobile phones belonging to the victims from the suspects.
The SP said police had been working to solve the case using technology, local sources and intelligence surveillance since the bodies were recovered. As part of the investigation, Asadul was arrested from Chandrerkhola village in Kachua on Saturday night.
Based on information obtained from him, police later arrested Arif Howladar Babu. Jahidul had been arrested earlier.
Police said the three suspects admitted their involvement in the killings during preliminary interrogation.
According to police, Jahidul allegedly had an extramarital relationship with a woman from the victims’ family. The relationship reportedly caused conflict within Jahidul’s family and led to an argument between him and Monira, one of the victims.
Police said Jahidul subsequently planned to kill the family and carried out the killings with the help of Asadul and Arif.
On 4 August, police recovered the partially decomposed bodies of three members of the same family from their home in Chandrerkhola village. They had reportedly been missing since the afternoon of 2 August.
That night, Faisal Howladar, elder brother of victim Ahad, filed a murder case with Kachua Police Station against unidentified suspects.
The victims were Ahad Howladar, son of late Abdhar Ali Howladar; his mother Monira Begum; and his maternal grandmother Rashida Begum. Rashida was the wife of late Abdur Rashid of Brishtipur village in Bagerhat Sadar upazila.
They were buried on 5 August, a day after their bodies were recovered.
