Police have arrested three people in connection with the murder of a garment worker whose dismembered body was recovered from a canal beside a highway in Gazipur, according to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
The victim was identified as Doli Akter, 30, a garment worker from Mymensingh who lived in a rented house in the Baniarchala area of Gazipur following her divorce.
PBI said Doli had been in a five-year relationship with Mishon Islam, 22, who worked at the same garment factory.
Investigators alleged that Mishon killed her after she repeatedly pressed him to marry her.
According to PBI, Doli went to Mishon’s rented home on the night of September 8, where she had dinner with Mishon and his mother, Banu Akter, 43. Later, an argument broke out between Doli and Mishon over their marriage and previous disputes.
PBI alleged that Mishon gave Doli sleeping pills and then suffocated her with a pillow. He allegedly kept her body under the bed before his mother discovered it the following morning.
Investigators said Mishon later bought a suitcase to dispose of the body.
As the body could not fit inside, he allegedly cut it into two pieces using a cleaver and a blade. One part was placed in the suitcase and the other in a plastic sack.
Mishon then called his friend Mizanur Rahman Milton, 24, on the pretext of moving house. The three allegedly transported the suitcase and sack by auto-rickshaw and dumped them into a canal near Bhabanipur Bridge.
Police recovered a cleaver, a sharp blade, adhesive tape, Doli’s national identity card and mobile phone based on information provided by the suspects.
The three suspects were arrested from separate rented houses in Gazipur.
PBI said they gave confessional statements before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on Sunday.
Doli’s elder brother later filed a murder case with Joydebpur Police Station after her identity was confirmed.
