A Dhaka court here today imposed a travel ban on four people, including former Bangladesh High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Saida Muna Tasneem and her husband Touhidul Islam Chowdhury, over graft allegations.
The two other people barred from leaving the country are their sons, Alvi Azfar Chowdhury and Javed Opgenhaffen.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir passed the order, allowing a plea filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to the case documents, an investigation is underway against Touhidul Islam Chowdhury, Saida Muna Tasneem and others over allegations of embezzling approximately Tk 2,000 crore in loans from various banks and financial institutions through collusion and corruption, and laundering the money abroad.
In its plea, the ACC said a reliable source had revealed during the investigation that the persons concerned might leave the country and flee abroad. Therefore, it said, imposing a travel ban was necessary in the interest of a proper investigation.
The same court today also imposed a travel ban on Emma Claire Burton, the British-born wife of former Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, for allegedly failing to submit a wealth statement.
