The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved separate cases against seven former lawmakers and several of their family members over allegations of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income, concealing wealth information and money laundering.
ACC Secretary Md Saidur Rahman Khan disclosed the decision at a press briefing on Wednesday.
The former lawmakers facing cases are Selim Altaf George and Abdur Rauf of Kushtia-4, Rezaul Haque Chowdhury of Kushtia-1, Md Abu Zahir of Habiganj-3, Haji Rahim Ullah of Feni-3, Nur Uddin Chowdhury Nayan of Lakshmipur-2 and former reserved-seat MP Farida Yasmin.
Their wives, brothers and other relatives have also been named in some of the cases.
According to the ACC, Selim Altaf George allegedly concealed Tk 64.48 lakh in his wealth statement and acquired Tk 1.01 crore in assets beyond his known sources of income.
The commission also approved a case against Abdur Rauf over an alleged Tk 2.65 crore in undisclosed-source assets. His wife, Jannatun Nahar, is accused of acquiring Tk 1.40 crore in assets beyond known income, with a separate case approved over allegations that Rauf assisted in acquiring the assets.
Rezaul Haque Chowdhury allegedly concealed Tk 37.27 lakh in his wealth statement and acquired Tk 2.47 crore in assets beyond his known sources of income. His brother, Daulatpur upazila former chairman Bulbul Ahmed Token Chowdhury, is also facing allegations involving concealed assets and unexplained wealth.
In the case involving former Habiganj-3 MP Md Abu Zahir, the ACC alleges that he concealed Tk 7.27 crore in movable and immovable assets. The commission also alleges that he possessed Tk 9.33 crore in assets inconsistent with his known sources of income and that Tk 22.56 crore was transferred through four bank accounts. The allegations include money laundering.
Former Feni-3 MP Haji Rahim Ullah is accused of acquiring Tk 3.84 crore in assets beyond his known sources of income.
Former Lakshmipur-2 MP Nur Uddin Chowdhury Nayan is accused of acquiring Tk 79.99 lakh in assets inconsistent with his known income. His wife, Chowdhury Rubina Yasmin Lubna, allegedly acquired Tk 1.83 crore in similar assets. The ACC has also approved a separate case over allegations that Nayan assisted in the acquisition of his wife’s assets.
Former reserved-seat MP Farida Yasmin is accused of acquiring Tk 2.74 crore in assets beyond her known sources of income. The ACC also alleges that Tk 21.09 crore was transacted through 17 bank accounts operated by entities linked to her.
The ACC has also approved cases against former Basurhat municipal mayor Abdul Quader Mirza, his wife Akhtar Jahan Bakul and their son Mirza Masrur Kader Tashik over alleged unexplained assets.
A separate case has been approved against former Jashore municipal mayor Zahirul Islam Chaklader and his wife Shamima Sharmin over alleged assets beyond their known sources of income.
The commission has also approved cases against former Khulna District Council administrative officer S M Mahabubur Rahman and his wife Zakia Mahabub over allegations of acquiring unexplained assets and concealing wealth information.
The allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.
